Large, ivory cups, lemon scented, in May & June & sporadically all summer & fall. 6” long leaves, waxy green on top and silvery-frosted beneath. In fall fruits open to reveal bright red seeds.

Rosette of thick silver-grey leaves with an inch-long terminal tip of each spine and offshoots, knowns as “pups” emerge near the base, even of young plants. Flowers only once & takes +10 years. In Z 5-6 plant in spring to get established.
Size: 18” x 18-28”
Care: sun in well-drained soil. We grow this in Z 5A on the south-facing side of a mound of well-drained soil, with a few large rocks nearby and gravel mulch.
Native: mountains of Arizona and New Mexico.

Profuse golden yellow flowers from July through fall, slow to emerge in spring so don’t prematurely assume it’s gone. Very sweet yellow blooms over long period of time.

The name Zinnia honors German botany professor Johann Gottfried Zinn (1727-1759). This species 1st collected by Edwin James, physician and botanist on the Long Expedition in 1820.

The name Aconitum is from the mythical hill Aconitus in Pontica where Hercules fought with Cerberus. Philip Miller in The Gardener’s Dictionary (1768) wrote that the name Aconitum comes from Greek word for dart “because the Barbarians used to daub their darts therewith.” The Monkshood reputedly sprang from the jaws of Cerberus, the guard dog of the underworld. In China called “bao ye wo tou.” Wm. Robinson considered this one of the best monkshoods. Collected before 1820.
