Airy rose-pink umbels like a short, pink Queen Anne’s lace, blooming in spring to early summer, compliment the fern-like apple-scented fragrant foliage.
Size: 24” x 12”
Care: sun to part shade in moist well-drained soil, cut back to refresh foliage and rebloom.

Named from Greek chairo meaning “to please” & phyllon meaning “leaf,” so named “because the leaves, steeped in wine, and drank, will exhilarate and chear (sic.) melancholy persons… (it) grows naturally on the Alps, and the Helvetian mountains. …the stalk (is) terminated by large umbels of flowers, in which some plants are red and in others white…. These plants are preferred in botanic gardens for variety …” Gardeners’ Dictionary, 1768. 1st Described by Swiss botanist Gaspard Bauhin in 1600’s.

Cheerful, small white daisies flower all summer and autumn.

Native: Europe and Caucasus
Common name “Feverfew” speaks for itself, referring to the plant’s medicinal qualities. The species’ name parthenium comes from Plutarch who claimed that the plant saved the life of a construction worker who fell from the Parthenon. Feverfew was prescribed to remedy coughs, indigestion, congestion, melancholy, hysteria, vertigo, freckles, opium overdoses and for “them that are giddie in the head.” Parkinson. A favorite early cottage garden flower. Pressed specimen in Emily Dickinson’s herbarium.

Short hedge-hog like clump with white flowers turning to bronzy spiked seedheads May-June. Best for rock, railroad or fairy gardens – anyplace for a miniature, clumping grass.

Giant profusion of white flowers from late May to June
Size: 7-8’ x 5’
Care: full sun in well-drained soil
Native: Caucasus
First collected before 1863. ”This is a stately and noble plant, with large heart shaped leaves. The loose flower-heads, which are often 6 feet in height, and nearly as much through, are composed of myriads of small white flowers, which at a distance may be likened to a giant specimen of Gypsophila; it blooms during June and July.” H.H. Thomas 1915.
